The Case for Certified Lake Testing

In the U.S., certified environmental labs operate under formal oversight from state agencies and EPA programs. They use EPA-approved or Standard Methods, follow strict quality controls, maintain chain-of-custody, and undergo regular audits and proficiency testing. As a result, their data is considered defensible and authoritative, suitable for regulatory use, grant applications, and public health decisions.

Non-certified labs can still produce useful data, especially for screening, education, trend tracking, or early detection. They are often faster and less expensive, making them valuable tools for routine monitoring or citizen science. However, they typically lack the formal documentation and oversight required for high-stakes decisions.

The distinction matters when results are questioned. Non-certified data can help inform your understanding of lake conditions, but certified lab results carry weight with agencies, funders, and skeptical stakeholders.
