Description

Not sure if the aquatic plants growing in your lake are native or invasive? Lake Pulse offers a convenient, affordable solution to help you identify species and determine whether they belong in your region or pose an invasive threat that requires urgent action to prevent their spread.

Here are the most prominent invasive weeds reported by Lake Pulse subscribers:

- Eurasian Watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum): Forms dense underwater mats that crowd out native plants and hinder recreation.

- Hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata): Grows rapidly from lakebed to surface, choking ecosystems and outcompeting all native vegetation.

- Curly-Leaf Pondweed (Potamogeton crispus): Emerges early in spring, displacing native species and causing oxygen crashes when it dies off.

- Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes): A floating plant that blocks sunlight, clogs waterways, and depletes oxygen.

- Brazilian Elodea (Egeria densa): Spreads from aquarium releases, forming thick underwater growth that disrupts lake ecology.

- Fanwort (Cabomba caroliniana): Delicate-looking but invasive, it spreads quickly and smothers native aquatic vegetation.

And a long-tail of dozens more.

What problem does this solve?

You’ve spotted a type of aquatic plant (weed) in your lake that you’ve never seen before. Is it native or invasive? If you’re unsure, consider using Lake Pulse to confirm not only the identity of this plant but also to catalog all the aquatic weeds present in your lake.

What's included?

After you upload at least 5 photos of the aquatifc plant you’d like identified, the Lake Pulse Boathouse team will review them and email you a summary indicating which species are native to your area and which may be invasive.

Why 5 photos?

To ensure we correctly ID the plant, best to have 1) an image of it in lake - high level, 2) one in the lake - up close, 3) one in your hand, 4) one on the dock - up close, and 4) one of it dried out.

Results

Gain greater confidence in your aquatic plant management program and enjoy peace of mind knowing whether invasive species are present. If invasives are identified, you’ll have the information you need to begin effective control measures.
