TSS & Turbidity Test

While a TSS test along is valuable - telling you how much material is in the water, turbidity tells you how that material affects water clarity and light penetration. Testing both provides a fuller picture: TSS identifies the “load” of particles, and turbidity indicates the ecological and aesthetic impact.

• TSS measures the actual mass of particles suspended in the water (like silt, organic matter, and algae), giving a quantitative sense of how much material is present. This helps identify sources of sediment, erosion, or pollution and informs sediment management strategies.
• Turbidity, on the other hand, measures how much the water is cloudy or opaque due to light scattering by those particles. It’s more of a visual and ecological indicator—high turbidity can reduce sunlight penetration, affecting photosynthesis in aquatic plants and overall lake health.
