Description

The Lake Hydrocarbon Pollutants Test is a certified laboratory test panel designed to detect and quantify petroleum-based pollutants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in your lake's water or sediment. This panel analyzes 18 specific hydrocarbon compounds using EPA Method 8270C, delivering high-sensitivity results (in parts per billion) for substances commonly linked to oil runoff, industrial discharges, and combustion byproducts. Ideal for lakes near marinas, roadways, or urban areas, this test provides essential data for diagnosing contamination, informing clean-up strategies, and protecting aquatic health.

What problem does this solve?

You are concerned with hydrocarbon pollutants entering your lake through stormwater runoff, leaky fuel tanks, atmospheric deposition, boating activity, and/or industrial contamination. These pollutants tend to persist in sediments and bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms, posing serious long-term risks.

This panel includes:

1-Methylnaphthalene, 2-Methylnaphthalene, and Naphthalene – often associated with petroleum leaks and incomplete combustion, toxic to aquatic invertebrates and fish.

Acenaphthene, Acenaphthylene, Fluorene, Phenanthrene, and Anthracene – mid-weight PAHs linked to industrial runoff and fossil fuel residues; known to disrupt aquatic reproduction and growth.

Benzo(a)anthracene, Chrysene, Fluoranthene, and Pyrene – formed during high-temperature combustion; harmful to fish and benthic communities.

Benzo(a)pyrene, Benzo(b)fluoranthene, Benzo(k)fluoranthene, Benzo(g,h,i)perylene, Dibenzo(a,h)anthracene, and Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene – high molecular weight PAHs that are carcinogenic, persistent, and bioaccumulative, often found near marinas, airports, or highway-adjacent lakes.

These contaminants degrade slowly, settle in sediments, and can impair reproduction, growth, and survival of aquatic life.

Testing for hydrocarbons is critical in lakes where fuel use, vehicle runoff, or industrial activity may contribute to water quality degradation. This panel helps Lake Pulse subscribers identify unseen threats, build defensible environmental assessments, and prioritize mitigation strategies that safeguard both ecosystems and public health.
