Description
Description
This test combines environmental DNA (eDNA) and environmental RNA (eRNA) testing to deliver the most accurate, early-stage detection of zebra mussels—one of the most damaging invasive species threatening North American lakes.
Each order includes three (3) sampling cartridges, allowing collection of discrete water samples from three targeted locations within the lake for laboratory analysis.
Using qPCR technology, this test identifies genetic material shed by zebra mussels in the water, even when no live mussels are visible. This dual-method approach allows lake managers to take proactive action before infestations become established, helping to protect water infrastructure, native biodiversity, and recreational water use.
Why Both eDNA and eRNA?
- eDNA detects any zebra mussel genetic material present in the water—such as from waste, shells, or decaying tissue. It’s excellent for detecting whether mussels have been in the lake, even if they’re no longer alive.
- eRNA, on the other hand, degrades more quickly and is only present when mussels are actively alive and reproducing. It’s a marker of current biological activity.
By testing for both, you gain a far more complete picture: 1) eDNA shows historical or trace presence, and 2) eRNA confirms active, potentially spreading infestations
This combination is critical for distinguishing between past contamination and urgent, active risk—especially in lakes preparing for treatment, containment, or restoration strategies.
Methodology
Our partner lab uses quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR)—a highly sensitive method that amplifies small fragments of DNA and RNA specific to zebra mussels.
In plain terms: Every organism leaves behind tiny traces—like mucus, eggs, or waste—in the water. qPCR works like a precision detector, scanning for these molecular signals and amplifying them, so even a few microscopic particles can trigger a detection. It’s like finding a biological fingerprint in a vast lake.
